Friday Prayer in Makkah and Madinah: What Pakistani Pilgrims Need to Know
Jummah in the Haramain is the Friday congregational prayer offered in Masjid al-Haram (Makkah) or Masjid an-Nabawi (Madinah). For pilgrims from Pakistan, it runs differently from home: there is no bayan, no break for Sunnahs before the sermon, and the first adhan does not mean prayer time has started.
Get these three things right, and you can stop worrying about the rest:
- The first adhan is a 30-minute warning. Don’t pray yet.
- The Khutbah starts the moment the second adhan ends, and you stay completely silent.
- You pray your missed pre-Fard Sunnahs after the Fard.
How Friday prayer differs from home
At home, once Zawaal ends, you hear an adhan, then a bayan, then the Imam gives you a gap to pray four Sunnahs. After the second adhan comes the Khutbah, then two Fard Rak’ahs and the post-Fard Sunnahs.

In the Haramain, the schedule goes from adhan to sermon with nothing in between.
The first adhan is a warning, not a start
In Makkah and Madinah, the first adhan (the Ittilai adhan) sounds about 30 minutes before Jumu’ah time begins. Its job is to tell the whole city the prayer is coming.
This is the most common mistake pilgrims from Pakistan make. They hear the Azaan, assume time has entered, and start praying Sunnahs. But the time hasn’t entered yet, so those Sunnahs are premature.
Sit down instead. Recite the Quran Pak quietly or make silent dhikr until the actual prayer time begins.
The Khutbah: silence from the first word
When Zawaal ends, the second Azaan is called. The second it finishes, the Imam stands and starts the Khutbah. No pause.
Listening in complete silence is required for every sermon, including Jummah, Eid, and Hajj. During the Khutbah, don’t:
- Pray Sunnah or Nafil
- Recite the Quran aloud
- Make audible dua
- Do anything else that pulls your attention away
How to pray the Sunnahs you missed
There is no gap before the Khutbah, so you move the four pre-Farz Sunnahs to the end. On an ordinary day, Zuhr is four Sunnah, four Fard, two Sunnah, and two Nafil. On Friday, two Farz replace the four.
After the Imam finishes, pray in this order:
- 2 Rakat Fard behind the Imam
- 4 Rakat Sunnah (post-Fard)
- 2 Rakat Sunnah (post-Fard)
- 4 Rakat Sunnah (the pre-Fard Sunnahs you skipped)
Short version: 2 Fard, 4 Sunnah, 2 Sunnah, 4 Sunnah. You keep every Sunnah, and you never break the Khutbah’s silence.
Guidance for women
Friday prayer isn’t obligatory for women, at home or in Makkah and Madinah. The preferred practice is to pray regular Zuhar in your hotel room.
A woman may attend Jumu’ah at the Haram if all of these are true:
- Her hotel is close to the Haram
- She can get there without being stranded in road crowds
- She can maintain full modesty (Pardah)
- She’s combining the visit with Tawaf or Umrah
Traveling a long way from distant accommodation, through heat and dense crowds, just to pray Jumu’ah at Masjid al-Haram is discouraged.
For men staying far from the Haram
If you are in Aziziyah, Batha Quraish, or An-Nuzhah, getting to Masjid al-Haram on a Friday can be a real ordeal. The crowds are extreme.
The 100,000-fold reward (one lakh neeki) isn’t tied to the building of Masjid al-Haram alone. According to the guidance this post draws on, it extends across the whole Haram boundary of Makkah. A neighborhood mosque inside that boundary gets you the full reward.
So if you can reach Masjid al-Haram comfortably, go. If it means hardship, pray at your local mosque and don’t doubt what you’ve earned.
Same rules in Madinah
Everything above applies at Masjid an-Nabawi too: respect the early Azaan, stay silent through the Khutbah, and pray your pre-Farz Sunnat last. Learn the order, and forward this blog to pilgrims around you.
