Halawat al-Iman and Contentment with Allah: Masjid Al Haram Friday Sermon 23 Oct 2026 (12 Jumada al-Awwal 1448 AH)
In the spiritual heart of the Islamic world, addressing hundreds of thousands of worshippers gathered at the Grand Mosque in Makkah (Al-Masjid al-Haram), the renowned scholar and preacher Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid delivered a Friday sermon centered on an enduring human struggle: why do some individuals move through life with unshakable serenity, while others—despite having material abundance—remain trapped in chronic weariness, anxiety, and discontent?
Opening his address, Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid exhorted Muslims to observe Taqwa (God-consciousness), practice unwavering sincerity in worship, firmly adhere to the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), and race toward righteous deeds. He framed peace of mind not as an accident of circumstance, but as the direct outcome of one’s spiritual condition.
Observing the human reality, Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid highlighted a profound contrast visible in society:
- The Wholesome Life: Individuals who enjoy abundant goodness, comfort, and inner ease. They are generous toward themselves and others, possess pure hearts, maintain a sound and discerning mind, and carry a cheerful countenance.
- The Weary Life: Individuals living in persistent hardship and misery, plagued by boredom, complaints, and existential distress. They lose their sense of security, comfort, and peace, remaining trapped in grievances, hatred, and unbridled selfishness.
What creates this fundamental divide? Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid explained that the answer lies in faith and the sweetness of faith (Halawat al-Iman).
What is Halawat al-Iman? The Invisible Nourishment
Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid affirmed that true faith and its sweetness are among the greatest catalysts for the tranquility of the soul, peace of the heart, and enduring happiness in this life.
Halawat al-Iman is not a temporary emotional high; it is an internal quietude that moves secretly within the heart—likened to the silent flow of water through a tree branch or blood coursing through human veins. Just as water nourishes a branch from deep within before leaves and fruit appear on the surface, true faith restores the human spirit invisibly before manifesting outwardly as serenity, patience, and warmth.
According to Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid, tasting this sweetness directly dispels:
- Insomnia, chronic anxiety, sadness, and boredom.
- The suffocating inner constriction (diq) that leaves people feeling crushed by life’s demands.
In their place, faith instills spiritual expanse, reassurance, and moral fortitude:
“Faith in Allah is the tranquility of the soul and the guidance of the heart, the beacon of the seekers, the hope of the despairing, the security of the fearful, the victory of the strivers, the good news of the pious, and the gift of the deprived… it represents self-confidence, the spirit of peoples, and the hope of nations.”
The Three Portals to Tasting the Sweetness of Faith
To unlock this inner peace and experience lasting happiness, Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid outlined three foundational portals rooted in prophetic tradition:
1. Contentment with Allah as Lord (Ar-Rida billahi Rabban)
Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid pointed out that the first gateway to tasting the sweetness of faith is accepting Allah as the supreme Lord and Master. He is the One who oversees every soul according to what it earns, the Most Gracious and Most Merciful in this world and the Hereafter, the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth, the Creator of death, life, and the universe, the Bestower of boundless blessings, the Answerer of the distressed, the Remover of harm, the Guide from misguidance, and the Teacher after ignorance.
Recognizing His supreme wisdom frees the believer from obsessive anxiety over outcomes beyond human control.
2. Contentment with Islam as Religion (Ar-Rida bil-Islami Dinan)
The second gateway is embracing Islam as the complete divine way of life revealed by Allah to His Messenger and approved for His servants. Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid stressed that contentment with Islam provides moral clarity, serves as the ultimate source of light and guidance, and grants the believer unshakeable steadfastness in the face of trials as long as their religion remains preserved.
To illustrate this invulnerability, the sermon recalled the historic exchange between Sayyiduna Umar ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) and his wife, Atikah (رضي الله عنها):
- In a moment of anger, Umar (رضي الله عنه) told her: “By Allah, I will surely upset you!”
- Atikah calmly asked: “Can you turn me away from Islam after Allah has guided me to it?”
- Umar replied: “No.”
- She answered with absolute certainty: “Then with what can you possibly upset me?!”
The Insight: Earthly losses, harsh words, and interpersonal friction cannot shatter inner tranquility when spiritual convictions remain intact.
3. Contentment with Muhammad (ﷺ) as Messenger (Ar-Rida bi-Muhammadin Rasula)
Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid explained that the third gateway is accepting Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) as the trustworthy advisor, the bestowed mercy, and the paramount role model. True contentment is achieved by seeking guidance through him, emulating his character, and actively illuminating one’s daily life through his Sunnah.
The Believer’s 5-Point Operational Mindset
Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid explained that whoever tastes the sweetness of faith lives a wholesome life, knows their path, walks with insight, and attains true contentment. Such a believer meets the divine decrees of life with complete reassurance, experiencing peace regardless of how external circumstances shift.
They neither despair over what has passed them by nor rejoice over worldly gains with arrogance. Life’s hardships cannot tarnish their serenity or shake their patience, embodying the prophetic balance of gratitude in times of ease and patience in times of hardship. Firm faith liberates the believer from fear, grief, and anxiety, reinforcing their reliance on Allah and their absolute confidence in His plan.
Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid summarized this behavioral framework into a five-part decision matrix for every circumstance:
| Circumstance | Believer’s Response | Arabic Core | Practical Meaning |
| When Given a Blessing | Accepts and Gives Thanks | إذا أُعطي تقبل وشكر | Acknowledges the Provider and avoids arrogance. |
| When Denied or Deprived | Accepts and Remains Patient | إذا مُنع رضي وصبر | Trusts divine wisdom without falling into bitterness. |
| When Commanded | Hastens to Obey | إذا أُمر بادر واأتمر | Acts decisively without hesitation or cynicism. |
| When Forbidden | Rushes to Refrain | إذا نُهي سارع وزجر | Establishes firm moral boundaries. |
| When Falling into Sin | Instantly Seeks Forgiveness | إذا أذنب استغفر | Turns back in repentance without rationalizing mistakes. |
The Subtle Peril: “Leaving a Blessing Unaware”
Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid delivered a stern warning regarding the spiritual decay caused by ingratitude: remaining inside a blessing without expressing gratitude causes a person to slip out of that blessing without even realizing it.
Loss of peace is rarely an overnight event. Ingratitude acts as a slow, unperceived erosion. A person may still hold external wealth, status, or comfort, but the spiritual warmth, security, and light of that blessing quietly vanish.
The Tragic Reality of Weak or Absent Faith
In the second sermon, Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid warned against the severe consequences of spiritual emptiness:
- The Crisis of Weak Faith: A person with fragile faith panics and complains during trials because they do not know the Divine One testing them. They fear the journey because they carry no provisions, and they lose their way because they lack a guide.
- The Disintegration of Character: When faith is lost entirely, a person’s affairs fall into imbalance. They speak and act without internal supervision, proceeding without moral accountability. Selfishness and egotism dominate, undermining confidence in themselves and others, until animosity replaces compassion and disunity replaces cooperation.
Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid issued a vivid warning regarding society devoid of faith:
“The absence of faith and its sweetness makes people like ferocious beasts, cuts off their connection with Allah and with people, makes them submit to their evil-commanding souls, and causes them to follow the devils of jinn and mankind.”
Conclusion: Renewal of Faith and Closing Prayers
Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid concluded his Friday sermon by advising Muslims to fear Allah, obey His Messenger (ﷺ), adhere firmly to their faith, and constantly renew the deep meanings of being content with Allah as Lord, with Islam as religion, and with Muhammad (ﷺ) as Messenger and Prophet.
The khutbah concluded with heartfelt supplications for peace, stability, and unity across the Muslim Ummah, including prayers for the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, the Crown Prince, the armed forces guarding the borders, the oppressed people of Palestine, and the protection of Al-Aqsa Mosque. Following the sermon, Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid led the Friday congregational prayer, reciting Surah Al-Fil in the first unit and Surah Quraysh in the second.
